In summer 2012 ends the duration of the Naumburg Kolleg of 3 years, which was originally planned. The Volkswagen Foundation grants this extension to investigate further aspects. On the thematic focuses and the current state of their studies the PhD students report in the submenu of each partial project.

From 13th to 15th october 2011 experts from nine countries met to exchange about polychrome stone sculpture of the 13th century. Thereby Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schießl, who had initiated the conference, arranged not only a special scientific present posthumously for the PhD students of the Naumburg Kolleg. The reports of findings of examinations of European polychrome stone sculptures provided a platform for stimulating discussions. Also the PhD students of the Naumburg Kolleg, Bernadett Freysoldt, Daniela Karl, Jacqueline Menzel and Dominik Jelschewski presented their intermediate results in exemplary. The scientific exchange about details in the materials used and the painting technique suggested continuing current investigation.

»Off the Beaten Track« under this motto the Volkswagen Foundation supports the Naumburg Kolleg and offers eleven young scientists a unique opportunity to research the west choir of Naumburg Cathedral from different scientific points of view. The disciplines of art technology and conservation science, natural sciences, building archaeology, history of art, medieval history/ regional history and economic geography and tourism research work hand in glove with each other for interdisciplinary studies.

Looking back over its term of three years the findings and results of the Naumburg Kolleg will be presented in a  final congress. The final colloquium intends to give an insight to the general public and provide a platform for discussion.

The excursion visited selected places and castles in the region of Saale-Unstrut and also historical quarries at Himmelreich, around Obermöllern, Zscheiplitz and Balgstädt. Reinhard Schmitt (Landesamt für Denkmalpflege und Archäologie Sachsen-Anhalt) accompanied the Naumburg Kolleg to Freyburg (castle Neuenburg und city church), Goseck (former cloister church und castle), Bad Kösen (Romanisches Haus, Rudelsburg) and Naumburg (Ägidienkurie).

Prof. Dr. Heiner Siedel (scientific assistant at the Institute of Geotechnics / TU Dresden and honorary professor at the HfBK Dresden) presented his results of his geoscientific study about the origin of the natural stones used:

The natural area of the valleys of Saale and Unstrut offers favourable conditions for the extraction of natural stone for buildings like the Naumburg Cathedral. Both rivers are navigable and allow a quite simple transport from quarries near the waterside to the construction side of the Cathedral.

In the Naumburg Cathedral an important stone for architecture and sculpture is shell limestone, especially Freyburger Schaumkalk.

The characteristic porous structure of this shell limestone is combinated with inclusions of fossils respectively the hollow forms. These characteristics are visible on the statues of the founders and also on the passion reliefs at the west rood screen.

The Naumburger Meister used this material, which is easy to sculpt. Concerning the stone volume he had to accept compromises: The volumes of the extractable blocks of stone were limited by the quite low thickness of the shell limestone layers in the quarries. If larger work pieces are required, horizonatal blocks must be quarried. Generally, the deposits of large-size blocks were limited, e.g. for the statues of the founders and passion reliefs. So the sculptor had to accept certain quality defects e.g. an inhomogeneous surface caused by fossil inclusions in layers.

The question about the exact origin of the natural stones of the west choir of the Naumburg Cathedral can not answered finally. A lot of the historical quarries are not accessible today or the deposits are quarried. Instead of a numerous sampling of the regional quarries and the natural stones of the sculptures in the Naumburg Cathedral, this problem was investigated in general geologically and geomorphologically.

Als Projektsprecher des Naumburg Kolleg und Betreuer des Teilprojektes Kunsttechnologie und Konservierungswissenschaften war Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schießl maßgeblich am Aufbau des Forschungs­projektes beteiligt und machte das Naumburg Kolleg zu dem, was es heute ist. Mit ihm verliert das Naumburg Kolleg einen unvergesslichen Menschen.

Der Projektpartner des Naumburg Kolleg für Kunsttechnologie und Konservierung, Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden, Prof. Dr.Ulrich Schießl, veranstaltet ein wissenschaftliches Kolloquium zum Thema "Polychrome Steinskulptur des 13. Jahrhunderts". Das Kolloquium ist Teil des Veranstaltungsprogramms im Naumburg Kolleg und findet vom 13. bis 15. Oktober 2011 in Naumburg statt.

Mit den Untersuchungen der Polychromie der Stifterfiguren und der Lettnerreliefs des Naumburger Meisters, ein Teilprojekt des interdisziplinären von der VolkswagenStiftung seit Juni 2009 geförderten Naumburg Kolleg, werden umfangreiche Ergebnisse zum Ende der Projektlaufzeit 2012 erwartet. Die kunsttechnologischen Recherchen sowie diejenigen der Bauforschung erfolgten in situ bis zum Gerüstabbau im Februar 2011.

Mit der Tagung „Polychrome Steinskulptur des 13. Jahrhunderts“ trägt das Naumburg Kolleg neben dem wissenschaftlichen Ausstellungskolloquium (5. bis 8. Oktober) und der Dombaumeistertagung 2011 (20. bis 24. September) gleichzeitig zum Begleitprogramm der Landesausstellung Sachsen-Anhalt 2011 in Naumburg „Der Naumburger Meister – Bildhauer und Architekt im Europa der Kathedralen“ bei.

Mit ersten Ergebnisbeispielen der Untersuchungen in Naumburg und mit ausgewählten Beiträgen zur Polychromie der Steinskulptur in Deutschland und Europa soll ein Überblick über den Stand der Polychromieforschung im 13. Jahrhundert versucht und eine Diskussionsgrundlage gegeben werden. Nicht nur für die Beiträge zum Naumburger Dom wird angestrebt, Ergebnisse der Bauforschung bei baugebundener Skulptur zu integrieren. Weiter soll über aktuelle non-invasive naturwissenschaftliche Untersuchungsmöglichkeiten und moderne Bilderfassungsmethoden berichtet werden.

Tagungssprachen sind deutsch und englisch ohne Übersetzungsdienste. Die Tagungsbeiträge werden in einem Sammelband im Anschluss an die Tagung veröffentlicht. Die Tagungsveröffentlichung ist für die Teilnehmer zum Subskriptionspreis erhältlich. Die Teilnehmerzahl der Veranstaltung ist auf zweihundert begrenzt.
